Gold Prices in Syria: 21K, 24K and How the Gram Is Calculated

Where the Syrian gold price actually comes from, the one piece of arithmetic behind every karat, and why the jeweller's price is never the quoted price.

There is no separate 'Syrian gold price'

Gold is not priced in Syria. It is priced globally, in US dollars per troy ounce, and then translated into Syrian pounds. Every local figure you see is the product of two numbers, and both of them move.

On 6 September 2026 the global price was about $4,431.10 per troy ounce. A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, so that is roughly $142.46 for a gram of pure gold. Multiply by the market dollar rate of about 131.40 and you get roughly 18,720 new Syrian pounds for a gram of 24K.

That is the whole chain: global ounce price → gram → karat purity → dollar rate. Once you can walk it, no gold quote can surprise you.

Why the ounce is 31.1035 grams

Gold is traded in troy ounces, an older unit heavier than the ordinary ounce used for food. Dividing an ounce price by 28.35 instead of 31.1035 is one of the commonest ways people arrive at a wrong gram price.

Karat is a fraction, and that is all it is

A karat number is simply how many parts out of 24 are gold. 24K is pure; 21K is 21 parts gold to 3 parts other metal, which is 87.5%. To price any karat, take the 24K gram price and multiply by that fraction. There is nothing else to it.

Why gold rises in Syria on days it did not rise globally

This is the question that confuses people most, and the answer follows directly from the chain above. The Syrian gold price has two inputs. If the global ounce price is flat but the pound weakens against the dollar, the local gold price rises anyway — not because gold got more expensive, but because the pound bought less of it.

The reverse also happens: gold can climb internationally while the local price barely moves, if the pound strengthened over the same period and the two effects cancelled out.

So before concluding that the local market did something unusual, check which of the two inputs moved. Most of the time it is the currency, not the metal.

A quick diagnostic

Look at the price in dollars per gram alongside the price in pounds. If the dollar figure is unchanged and the pound figure moved, what you are watching is the exchange rate, not the gold market.

Why the jeweller charges more than the calculated price

A calculated gram price is the value of the metal. It is not what a finished piece costs, and the gap is not a markup being hidden from you — it is real work and real overhead.

  • Craftsmanship (أجور الصياغة): the labour of turning metal into a piece, charged per gram and varying a great deal with how intricate the design is.
  • The shop's own margin, which differs between shops on the same street.
  • The buy-back price is always lower than the sell price. When you sell gold back, expect the metal value minus a deduction — craftsmanship is generally not recovered.
  • Scrap gold (كسر) is priced below new pieces for the same karat, because it has to be melted and reworked.
  • Stones, if any, are priced separately and are not gold weight.
Ask for the breakdown

Before buying, ask for the gram price, the karat, the weight, and the craftsmanship charge as separate numbers. A single total makes it impossible to tell whether the metal or the labour is what you are paying for.

Why 21K dominates in Syria and the region

21K is the working standard across much of the Arab world, and Syria is no exception. It is a compromise: high enough purity to hold value and keep the deep yellow colour buyers expect, hard enough to survive daily wear in a way 24K is not.

Pure gold is soft. A 24K ring bends and scratches with ordinary use, which is why 24K in the region circulates mostly as coins and bars — as a store of value rather than as jewellery.

18K is harder still and cheaper per gram because it is only 75% gold. It is common in European designs and in pieces set with stones, where the metal has to grip securely.

Reading a gold price before you buy

  • Confirm the karat first. A 21K price compared against an 18K price tells you nothing.
  • Confirm the unit: gram or ounce, and new pounds or old. A gold price in old pounds is 100 times the new-pound figure.
  • Check the dollar rate the same day. A gold quote and a dollar quote from different days do not belong in the same calculation.
  • Ask whether the price includes craftsmanship, and get the buy-back price too — the spread between them is your real cost if you may sell later.
  • Weigh the piece in front of you. Weight, karat and gram price are the only three numbers that produce the metal value.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a gram of 21K gold in Syria today?

On 6 September 2026 a gram of 21K worked out at roughly $124.66, or about 16,380 new Syrian pounds at a dollar rate near 131.40. Both inputs move daily, so check a live source rather than relying on a figure in an article.

How do I calculate 21K from the 24K price?

Multiply the 24K gram price by 21/24, which is 0.875. The same method works for any karat: 18K is 18/24, or 0.75.

Does the quoted price include craftsmanship?

No. A quoted gram price is the value of the metal. Craftsmanship is charged on top and varies with the design, and it is generally not recovered when you sell the piece back.

Why does the gold price differ between Damascus and Aleppo?

Mostly because the local dollar rate differs slightly, and because each shop applies its own margin and craftsmanship charge. The underlying metal price is the same everywhere.

What is the difference between 21K and 18K?

Purity. 21K is 87.5% gold and 18K is 75%, so 18K costs about 14% less per gram. 18K is harder, which makes it better suited to pieces set with stones.

Are these figures in new or old Syrian pounds?

New pounds, like every figure on SYPNow. Multiply by 100 for the old-pound equivalent — a 21K gram at 16,380 new pounds is 1,638,000 old.
